The Cawing Crow
By Linda A. Copp
Based on Gay Tracy's "Bird Without A Name"

A cawing crow has stubbed his toe
and wants the world to know it.
Screeching shamelessly he is aggrieved,
though his talon barely shows it.

Whining quite un-prettily, unrelentingly
he's a crier not a Poet!

So, he yells, "All's not well, Can't you tell?"
To the unfed vultures, hawks and gulls
circling overhead.

Just to let them feel his hurt is real.
His cawing not in vain.

He is just a grumpy crow, you know?
A crow without a name.
But clearly one in pain.

Beware my surly, braying bird
Take note of your friends descent.
Remember they're still stalking dinner.
Danger lay in your lament.

Weakness is like radar,
flexing claws are stretched.

So, smooth those ruffled feathers.
Soothe your temper too!
Were I you, my birdie friend
that's what I would do!

But, cawing crow won't listen
goes on squawking all the same.

I see a hawk has zeroed in.
I see him taking aim.
Behaviors learned are executed.

Predators need not know your name.

Their impact on the prey they've spied
results in dinner
all the same.
